If you are thinking about purchasing an EV for the first time, you probably have questions about electric vehicle charging times. As an EV owner, you’ll have several charging options, each of which features different ports and plugs. Charging times vary depending on the option you select, as well as the type, make, and model of electric vehicle you drive around Sparta and the surrounding areas.

New EVs include Level 1 chargers that provide an estimated four miles of range per charging hour. EV drivers usually keep Level 1 chargers as backups rather than relying on them exclusively.
Level 2 (240V+) chargers require professional installation and provide an estimated 24 miles of range per charging hour. These chargers offer faster electric vehicle charging times compared to Level 1 chargers.
Level 2 charging stations are increasingly popular in Onalaska, La Crosse, and elsewhere. Their charging speeds are similar to Level 2 home chargers. Public charging stations are typically found at parking garages, universities, and hotels, as well as major retail chains like Whole Foods, Walgreens, and Kohl’s.
Public charging stations can provide 150 kW of rapid charging to charge your EV model faster than any other option at up to 100 miles of range per 20 minutes of charging. These charging stations are not designed for home use and are found along highways and freeways.
Since plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV) rely on gas as well as electric power, they charge slowly compared to standard electric vehicles. It takes between one and four hours for a PHEV to fully charge.
Home charging stations provide 3.7 kW or 7 kW charging, while public stations offer 22 kW charging, 43-50 kW rapid charging, or 150 kW rapid charging. If you charge your vehicle at a public station, it could take as little as an hour. However, it could also take four hours or more depending on your specific EV.
